Owen Ward, Ph.D. – Founder
With over 35 years industrial and academic experience in bio-process research and development, Dr. Ward’s research is widely cited by the international scientific community. Dr. Ward is a recipient of the Distinguished Teachers Award from the University of Waterloo and a former President of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists. He is co-inventor on over a dozen patents or patent applications and provides patenting expertise related to preparation and review. He is passionately committed to the commercialization of sustainable, environmental technologies and job creation. Many of his former students have been appointed to positions in technology, research and business in North America and Europe. Dr. Ward has founded two other Ontario based venture-backed advanced bio-remediation technology companies, one of which is a public company.
Kurt C. Meyer, BA – President & CEO
Mr. Meyer’s career spans 30 years in the environmental services sector including executive level management positions with many of the most prominent leaders in the waste and recycling industry including Waste Management (Corp VP, Sales, VP National Accounts, Regional VP), Liberty Tire Recycling (Senior VP), Laidlaw Waste Systems (National Sales Manager) and Browning-Ferris Industries. Kurt received his Bachelor’s degree with a major in Political Science from Long Beach State University in California. His expertise includes significant involvement in strategic planning, sales training and structure, manpower deployment and profitability analysis. Prior to joining Lystek as President, Kurt Meyer was the Chief Operating and Business Development Officer for Talismark, an industry leader in third party solid waste and recycling services across North America.
Frederick Mosher, P.Eng. – Chief Technology Officer
Mr. Mosher is a Professional Engineer and a major shareholder in Lystek with over 40 years of technical and executive level management experience in the areas of water, wastewater, and solid waste management, which also includes large site assessments and all aspects of construction services. He has developed, lead and implemented state-of-the-art solutions for numerous projects in North America and internationally. He has been key to bringing new technologies in the areas of organics management into the North American market as a developer, shareholder and director in other successful business ventures prior to Lystek. As the President of Lystek during its technology development phase, he was instrumental in evolving the technology to suit the growing and changing market for wastewater treatment and biosolids management services, as he continues to do as the CTO. Mr. Mosher has also acted as a policy and technical advisor to government agencies and institutions such as the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. Mr. Mosher has undertaken various technical and management roles from project inception through to long-term operations for projects in Canada, the US, South America, the Philippines and the Caribbean. He has an established track record in the successful completion of projects in accordance with all applicable regulations and environmental approvals.
Ward Janssens – Executive Vice President, Business Development
Mr. Janssens offers over twenty years’ experience in the start-up, rapid expansion and management of several environmental sector businesses, with a focus on beneficial use and sustainability. Prior to joining Lystek, he was the co-founder and Director of Business Development for a leading, multi-national organics recycling firm where he was responsible for growing the business on an international scale. In this key, leadership role, he was responsible for overall management of the business and the establishment, environmental permitting and ongoing operations of two of the largest, totally enclosed, in-vessel composting facilities for Source Separated Organics (SSO) in Canada. Mr. Janssens has also played a key role in the development and delivery of organic processing technologies and solutions for some of the largest municipalities in North America. He is a passionate and active member of a number of industry-related associations and committees.
Kevin Litwiller, B.BA – Director of Marketing & Communications
Mr. Litwiller has held several, senior-level management positions in large corporations and hyper-growth, start-ups. His professional experience includes tenure as the National Director of Sales & Marketing for a global, online marketing firm. In this position, he led a team of consultative sales & marketing professionals through triple digit growth delivering complex, fully integrated, digital marketing solutions to Top Tier, global ad agencies and Fortune 500 brands. Prior to joining Lystek, Kevin was responsible for leading the Marketing and Business Development efforts of a national, software and professional services firm in the solid waste management sector. At Lystek, he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations in addition to developing new business opportunities.
Ajay Singh, Ph.D. – Technical Director
Dr. Singh has over 25 years’ experience in managing industrial operations and R & D with a background in applied and environmental microbiology and bioprocessing technology. He was one of the original founders of Lystek. Ajay has extensive operations and management experience with bioprocessing on a commercial scale in both North America and Europe. Dr. Singh has developed numerous bioreactor-based processes related to environment, fermentation, and food industries, has 15 patents to his credits, has published over 180 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and has co-authored 10 books in the areas of biotechnology and bioremediation. He is also a member of the Water and Environment Association of Ontario’s Residuals and Biosolids Committee.
James Dunbar, P.E., MBA – GM/Business Development Manager – Western U.S.A.
Mr. Dunbar is a Professional Engineer (in six US states) with more than 25 years’ experience in the management of solid waste and treatment of liquid wastes in the United States and Europe. He earned his engineering degree (civil and environmental) from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s in business (finance) from St. Xavier University. Jim has worked within the regulatory levels at the federal, state and local levels dealing with permitting and environmental compliance. His professional experience includes design, construction and operations of solid waste management facilities, including several years of management and technology transfer in Europe. Prior to joining Lystek, he served as district manager for wastewater operations in southern California and operations manager for a solid waste facility in northern California. Jim is an active member in the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA) and serves as a local Planning Commissioner.
Jim Belcastro, B. Sc., CHMM – Business Development Manager – Northeast U.S.A.
Mr. Belcastro is an experienced Certified Hazardous Materials Manager with over 17 years in the environmental services industry. He earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Connecticut with a focus on Natural Resources Management and his professional experience includes servicing the organic waste market in various roles, including field operations, sales and management. Jim has managed field staff and developed customized waste management programs, including standard operating procedures and documentation. He is also experienced in working with regulators to develop and submit permits for business operations. He has managed a range of projects from lab pack, remediation, industrial services and controlled substances to reverse distribution, retail waste, transportation and disposal for clientele in both the public and private sector, including big box retail stores, municipalities and multi-national corporations. Prior to joining Lystek, Jim was an account executive for a national, waste management firm, providing services to clients in 7 states. At Lystek, Jim is responsible for developing business across the eastern United States. He is a member of the Water Environment Federation, the Water Environment Associations of New England, New York, and New Jersey and a volunteer with Water for People.
Michael Dougherty, M.Sc., P.Ag. – Director of Product Management
Michael is a Professional Agrologist with experience managing beneficial use of biosolids projects in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. These projects have included spent aggregate pit reclamation, forestry and range land fertilization as well as agronomic agricultural applications. Mr. Dougherty holds a Masters of Science in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph, is a member of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, Canadian Society of Soil Science and Grey County Soil and Crop Improvement Association. Prior to his role as Director of Product Management, Michael was the Manager of Fertilizer Production & Distribution at the Southgate Organic Material Recovery Centre (OMRC). In this role, he helped to build and manage the operations team at the OMRC while working with local producers and the agricultural sector to form strategic partnerships and a strong, ever growing customer base of users for the LysteGro product. As Director of Product Management, Michael is responsible for fertilizer sales and coordination for all Lystek sites as well as the development of alternative product initiatives specific to agricultural, horticultural, nursery, and landscaping industries, among others.
