Owen Ward, PhD – Founder & Consultant
With over 35 years industrial and academic experience in bio-process research and development, Dr. Ward’s research is widely cited by the international scientific community. Dr. Ward is a recipient of the Distinguished Teachers Award from the University of Waterloo and a former President of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists. He is co-inventor on over a dozen patents or patent applications and provides patenting expertise related to preparation and review. He is passionately committed to the commercialization of sustainable, environmental technologies and job creation. Many of his former students have been appointed to positions in technology, research and business in North America and Europe. Dr. Ward has founded two other Ontario based venture-backed advanced bio-remediation technology companies, one of which is a public company.
Ajay Singh, PhD – Co-Founder & Technical Director
Dr. Singh has over 25 years of international experience in managing industrial operations and R & D with a background in applied and environmental microbiology and bioprocessing technology. He was one of the original founders of Lystek. Dr. Singh has developed numerous bioreactor-based processes related to water environment, fermentation, and food industries. He has 20 patents, over 200 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters to his credit, and co-authored 10 books in the areas of biotechnology, bioresource recovery and bioremediation. He is Lystek’s primary, technical representative on WERF LIFT research initiatives, is an active member of the Water and Environment Association of Ontario’s Residuals & Biosolids Committee, and North East Biosolids & Residual Association’s Research Committee.
Kurt C. Meyer, BA – President & CEO
Mr. Meyer’s career spans 30 years in the environmental services sector including executive level management positions with many of the most prominent leaders in the waste and recycling industry including Waste Management (Corp VP, Sales, VP National Accounts, Regional VP), Liberty Tire Recycling (Senior VP), Laidlaw Waste Systems (National Sales Manager) and Browning-Ferris Industries. Kurt received his Bachelor’s degree with a major in Political Science from Long Beach State University in California. His expertise includes significant involvement in strategic planning, sales training and structure, manpower deployment and profitability analysis. Prior to joining Lystek as President, Kurt Meyer was the Chief Operating and Business Development Officer for Talismark, an industry leader in third party solid waste and recycling services across North America.
Rick Mosher, PEng – Chief Technology Officer
Mr. Mosher is a Professional Engineer and a major shareholder in Lystek with over 40 years of technical and executive level management experience in the areas of water, wastewater, and solid waste management, which also includes large site assessments and all aspects of construction services. He has developed, lead and implemented state-of-the-art solutions for numerous projects in North America and internationally. He has been key to bringing new technologies in the areas of organics management into the North American market as a developer, shareholder and director in other successful business ventures prior to Lystek. As the President of Lystek during its technology development phase, he was instrumental in evolving the technology to suit the growing and changing market for wastewater treatment and biosolids management services, as he continues to do as the CTO. Mr. Mosher has also acted as a policy and technical advisor to government agencies and institutions such as the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. Mr. Mosher has undertaken various technical and management roles from project inception through to long-term operations for projects in Canada, the US, South America, the Philippines and the Caribbean. He has an established track record in the successful completion of projects in accordance with all applicable regulations and environmental approvals.
Michael Beswick, PEng, MASc – Director of R & D Applications
Mr. Beswick is a Professional Engineer whose career has focused on the development of environmental engineering technologies in the wastewater, water, and waste management sectors. Michael holds a Master’s of Applied Science in Environmental Systems Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph. He has been instrumental in designing and managing both in-plant deployments, and Lystek-owned merchant facilities. Michael is currently tasked with leading initiatives related to the on-going improvement of core Lystek technologies, as well as the development of new applications for the process. He also plays a key role in the development and delivery of customer-centric solutions for new project opportunities.
Kevin Litwiller, BBA – Director of Marketing & Communications
Mr. Litwiller has held senior-level management positions in large corporations and hyper-growth, start-ups. His professional experience includes tenure as the National Director of Sales & Marketing for a global, online marketing firm. In this position, he led a team of consultative sales & marketing professionals through triple digit growth delivering fully integrated, multi-million dollar digital marketing solutions to Top Tier ad agencies and Fortune 500 brands. Prior to Lystek, Kevin was responsible for leading the Marketing and Business Development efforts of a national, software and professional services firm with a focus on tracking material types, volumes and landfill diversion rates in the solid waste management sector. At Lystek, he oversees all Marketing, Communications, Branding, Customer Relations and Public Engagement initiatives in addition to developing new business opportunities.
James Dunbar, PE, MBA – GM/Business Development Manager
Mr. Dunbar is a Professional Engineer (in six US states) with more than 25 years’ experience in the management of solid waste and treatment of liquid wastes in the United States and Europe. He earned his engineering degree (civil and environmental) from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s in business (finance) from St. Xavier University. Jim has worked within the regulatory levels at the federal, state and local levels dealing with permitting and environmental compliance. His professional experience includes design, construction and operations of solid waste management facilities, including several years of management and technology transfer in Europe. Prior to joining Lystek, he served as district manager for wastewater operations in southern California and operations manager for a solid waste facility in northern California. Jim is an active member in the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA) and serves as a local Planning Commissioner.
Orlando A. Carreño, BS, CheEng.– Business Development Manager
Mr. Carreno holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and offers more than 25 years of experience in the environmental, water/wastewater treatment equipment and services sectors. He has worked in various capacities including as a Sales Engineer in his early career then as a Branch Manager overseeing sales and operations and progressing into a regional, Vice President role servicing customers throughout the USA, Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America. In these capacities, Orlando has been successful in providing customers with solutions for hazardous waste disposal and management services for both industrial and municipal clients in Southern California as well as well-head water treatment for contaminant removal. Prior to joining Lystek, he contributed to the growth of an organization providing proprietary desalination solutions in the USA-West and Latin America. Orlando is passionate about resource recovery and providing his customers with unique, cutting edge solutions that reduce waste, energy and water consumption.
Greg Brown, BBA – Business Development Manager
Mr. Brown has over 25 years in the environmental services sector. He earned his bachelor of business administration degree from Marymount University. His professional experience includes working in the anaerobic digestion industry, in sales and sourcing. Greg has developed customized waste and recycling management programs, including standard operating procedures and documentation. He has managed a range of projects from industrial services and retail waste and recycling, in both the public and private sector, including big box retail stores, municipalities and multi-national corporations. Prior to joining Lystek, Greg was a national account executive for a national, waste management firm, providing services to clients across the United States. At Lystek, Greg is responsible for developing business in the central and eastern regions of the United States.
Sarah Mason-Renton, BSc, PhD – Business Development Manager
Dr. Mason-Renton completed her Doctorate in Geography, Environment, and Sustainability at Western University. Her dissertation examined the public perceptions of facility siting processes and the beneficial use of biosolids in Ontario, Canada. She also has an Honors BSc in Cellular Biology, 15 peer-reviewed publications, and over eight years experience working with interdisciplinary teams that include private and public sector partners in the biosolids management and resource recovery sectors. Dr. Mason-Renton has led or been involved in various consultation and engagement processes related to community development projects or broader policy changes and has managed interdisciplinary projects with seven-figure budgets. She is the Chair of the Water Environment Association of Ontario Residuals and Biosolids Committee and an active member on the Canadian Biosolids Network Steering Committee and Southern Ontario Water Consortium Biosolids Working Group.
Simon Meulendyk, BES, PAg – Plant Manager
Mr. Meulendyk is a Professional Agrologist with a strong passion for agriculture related businesses and experience in biosolids beneficial use management. Simon’s experience with agriculture is rooted in his family’s award-winning dairy farm in Badjeros, ON. He continues to play an active role in the farm to this day. Simon completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo in Environmental Studies and he is a member of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists and the Grey County Soil and Crop Association. As Manager of the Southgate OMRC, he oversees all research & development initiatives, environmental and regulatory compliance, health and safety considerations, and training and coaching of center staff. Simon develops Lystek’s business in the region by working with generators to provide cost-effective solutions for biosolids management and beneficial use. He also oversees communications initiatives with local stakeholders and manages all marketing, sales and best management practices of the LysteGro biofertilizer product in the local, agricultural community.
Samantha Halloran, MSc, PAg – Manager, End Products
Ms. Halloran is a Professional Agrologist, with a background in agriculture and environmental compliance. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University, and a Master of Science from Trent University. Her masters research assessed nutrient availability, and examined the fate of emerging contaminants in alkaline stabilized biosolids. Samantha has a passion for environmental stewardship, with a specific interest in nutrient recycling and soil health. She oversees product management at Lystek, which includes new product and new market development, fertilizer registrations, land application and agricultural research projects. Samantha has served on the Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association and the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, and is an active member on the Young Professionals Committee for the Water Environment Association of Ontario.
Michael Dougherty, MSc, CCA 4R NMS, PAg – Product Management Consultant
Michael is a Professional Agrologist with experience managing beneficial use of biosolids projects in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. These projects have included spent aggregate pit reclamation, forestry and range land fertilization as well as agronomic agricultural applications. Mr. Dougherty holds a Masters of Science in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph, is a member of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, Canadian Society of Soil Science and Grey County Soil and Crop Improvement Association. Prior to his current capacity as a Product Management Consultant, Michael was the Manager of Fertilizer Production & Distribution at the Southgate Organic Material Recovery Centre (OMRC). In this role, he helped to build and manage the operations team at the OMRC while working with local producers and the agricultural sector to form strategic partnerships and a strong, ever growing customer base of users for the LysteGro product.
